Homeschooling: CC - Cycle 2 - Weeks 1 and 2

There are a lot of people asking me a lot of questions of what our homeschool curriculum involves. I am eager to share everything we are doing with our friends and family. Here are a few things we did last week and this week...

History:
Week 1: We learned about Charlemagne.  My favorite coloring pages come from Google image searches and filtering for line drawings. Blaine colored these while I read about Charlemagne and practicing reciting/singing his history sentence for the week.

Week 2: We learned about William the Conqueror. Blaine colored this image of William the Conqueror while I read. We also discussed feudalism and did a cut and paste activity. I can tell Blaine is definitely starting to absorb more of what I'm teaching him because last night, he jumped onto the sofa, threw all the pillows off, stomped his feet and declared that he was William the Conqueror and Vivienne was King Harold. It was basically the funniest thing ever.
Geography:
Week 1 - I made this "puzzle" (printable here) and laminated everything so we can reuse it. We also looked at everything on a globe and talked about how we live on the continent of North America. He really liked singing a song we downloaded from C3 and can identify all the continents and oceans!

Week 2 - I made another puzzle for European bodies of water (printable here). He is doing very well with geography. He quickly (in one sitting) memorizes everything.

English:
Week 1 - We memorized 8 parts of speech.  I made this pirate ship visual (printable here) with flaps that reveal parts of speech with a short description of their purpose. I laminated it so we can refer back to it throughout the year.

Week 2 - We talked about how pronouns replace nouns, so I came up with this cut and paste activity. Blaine really seems to enjoy cut and paste activities, so we will probably be doing a lot of those.

Art:
Week 1 - We learned about the 5 shapes used to "build" a drawing (boy terminology). I made another cut and paste activity to categorize shapes.

Week 2 - We did this mirror image exercise and took a trip to the tattoo shop to play on the big light table to create mirror images.

Math:
Week 1 and 2 - Skip counting by 1s, 2s, 3s, and 4s.  I brought out the scissors and glue stick again with these projects. This was actually the first time I've let Blaine use scissors on his own. So far, he is ambidextrous but insists on cutting with his left hand. Maybe I should find some preschool lefty scissors if this keeps up.

Science:
Week 1 - Blaine memorized 7 of the world's biomes  - this was one of his favorite subjects this week mostly because of a catchy song on C3. He is still asking to listen to it. I found a color by number project of North American biomes that he really enjoyed. I'm not sharing it because I really don't think it was accurate. But, at his age - I think the purpose was mostly to understand the world is made up of different biomes with various climates, animals and plants (more importantly being able to name them). And seriously - there is nothing cuter than a 4 year old saying "deciduous forest"

Week 2 - We are learning herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. I made this with random clipart found online and we did some other worksheets that I downloaded from C3. He is connecting that the chicken we eat is/was an actual chicken. He did seem a little troubled by that.

Latin:
We are learning present tense verb conjugation endings. Nothing really fun to show along with that, but he knows it! I am starting to consider future foreign language curriculums to add on at home. Maybe in a year or 2. Suggestions welcome! Considering Spanish, French, or possibly Mandarin.

That's it! Hopefully I will be posting every 2 weeks with what we are learning! Next week we start Hands On with Vivienne too!

Who wants to see an alligator?

MONTHS ago my mom asked us if we wanted to go to the Instagator Ranch in August to see baby alligators hatching. They took my nieces and nephews when they were younger and were dying to take Blaine and Vivienne. So since booking our reservation, every time my mom saw or spoke to the kids she would ask, "Who wants to see an alligator?" And both the kids would raise their hands and excitedly yell, "meeeeeeee!!" We like building anticipation in my family.

So the day finally arrived and we made the trip to the north shore to check it out. Instagator Ranch is a really cool operation. We spent some time hearing how they got started. At one point, alligators were nearing joining the endangered species list, but because of Instagator and other similar establishments, there are now more alligators than people in the state of Louisiana! The people of Instagator fly out over the marshes, locate alligator nests during June, collect the eggs, and bring them back to the ranch. Here, they hatch the eggs in August and release a percentage of the alligators back to their nest's area once they reach four feet long and can defend themselves from predators.

We took a tour of the ranch and got to see different sized alligators and feed them.

We were able to hold some that were probably about 2 feet long (mouths taped shut) in a pool. Vivienne got a kick out of grabbing them by the tail and pulling them closer for me to pick them up. She wasn't the least bit afraid! Louisiana girls are natural alligator wranglers.

We hatched FIVE baby alligators in our hands. This was a little weird. It consisted of breaking the hard outer shell and helping them break through the thick membrane, an act the babies could surely do naturally without our assistance. It was a little icky, but very cool!

This was such a fun experience.  We will definitely be going again one day! If you plan on visiting Instagator, make sure to go during hatching season and reserve an egg!

Blaine's Monster Truck Birthday Party

Blaine is currently obsessed with monster trucks. I've lost count of how many he owns and every time he has money to spend, that is always what he wants to buy. His favorite is Grave Digger, the headliner from the ever-so-classy Monster Jam event that my husband took him to earlier this year. They plan to make it an annual pilgrimage.

Something funny that I just have to share.... Vivienne's birthday this year fell on Endymion Saturday during Mardi Gras.  Our tattoo shop is ON the Endymion route.  You don't have to be a rocket scientist to come to the conclusion that my girl had an epic Mardi Gras birthday party.  Wellll..... Blaine, for about a month, said he wanted a monster truck birthday party. At the tattoo shop. WITH a parade like Vivi had.  Our sweet boy with that New Orleans heart. It was sad explaining to him that mommy and daddy just can't afford arranging something like an Endymion parade for his birthday. Since we have just started half birthday celebrations, maybe he will get lucky one year and we will throw him a big half bday Mardi Gras bash.

I had to make a serious effort to glam up a monster truck party as much as possible. I used the colors of Grave Digger (purple and green), a silhouette image of a monster truck, and a black and white checkered race flag pattern throughout the party decor.

I also made a photo garland of Blaine growing up. And on the TV is a 30 minute video of just monster trucks racing that Blaine would watch over and over and over if I let him.... we let him keep playing it at his party until the Saints game came on.

A little more about the details and DISASTERS.... (this is me being vulnerable)

The cake pops....
I almost cried for the first 5 or 6 that I made...

But I eventually got a rhythm and I was so excited with how they came out. It was my first time making them on my own. My favorite way to display them is in a trifle dish.

The cookies....
For some reason, in my mind, I had these simple cookie ideas that I thought would be cute, but they weren't....

So I put a little more effort in, adding headlights, the number 4, and a lightning bolt/zig-zag thing that sometimes looked like a "W". Overall, I was happy with them. I used them as favors and had some out on the cake table.

But the grand finale....
The cake...
I spent 2 days. I wanted to make a 2 tier topsy turvy styled cake. It was so cute. I was so proud.
I woke up the morning of the party with some light cleaning planned to finish preparing for the party and went in the kitchen to find this.... atrocity....
Seriously? I cried. Then, determined to have a cute cake, I ran to the store and switched on the oven. I made an entirely new cake, finishing about an hour before the party started. It wasn't as smooth as I would have liked, but it was cute, nonetheless.

Less eventful things that I did were cupcakes with matching cupcake toppers, water bottle labels, and groupings of paper lanterns in a few spots (which of course have no photos of)...

Blaine loved his party. He had so much fun, was surrounded by his favorite people, and got some really cool toys and clothes..... and this was the best family photo. Sorry. haha

A printable is available for instant download on Etsy here.

Our 4 year old son!

Wow! How has time flown by so fast? Blaine turns 4 tomorrow and had his first class day of CC today!  Here is our anti-cooperative first day of school photo...

I can't believe how much our lives have changed since Blaine. Birthdays really spark a happy (and tearful) trip down memory lane for me. I'll share...

One year ago....
For Blaine's third birthday party, my husband and I were recuperating from a very exhausting location move of our business, Mid City Voodoux Tattoos, so I arranged a small family party with some last minute Thomas the Train decorations, cake, everything. Being naturally crafty and loving extreme party planning, this was a little disappointing for me. I'm one of those excessive people that would rather spend a ridiculous amount of time, effort, and money making something by hand that could easily be purchased. However, I was reminded just how little Blaine cares about hand made party decor. He loved his cake and everything else.
Two years ago...
Blaine's second birthday party had a little  of my crafty twist to it, cupcakes and monkey themed, at the Monkey Room. I felt very accomplished, having a 6 month old baby and getting to still apply a little craftiness.... but apparently very few pictures.
Three years ago...
I was pregnant for Vivienne (in my first trimester) for Blaine's first birthday. Everything was brightly colored polka dots and bought online or at Party City. I had no energy. I ordered every single food item, drink, cake.... everything. Again, a little disappointing. I even had it at my mom's house to avoid preparing my house for company.
And, sadly, four years ago...
He was born about a week before his due date. Early in my pregnancy, my doctor told me she would be out of town helping her son move to college.... I always knew that would be the time Blaine would grace us with his presence. And grace us he did.

8 pounds and 1 ounce of the most perfect bundle of pure life changing awesomeness.

Happy Birthday to our big boy! Can't wait to celebrate this Sunday with friends and family!
I am beyond excited that this year, I have the time, energy, and patience to plan a nice party for my favorite little guy.

Because I said so

Me: Blaine, you need to go put your shirt and shorts on
Blaine: WHY?
Me: Because you need to wear clothes at the store
Blaine: WHY?
Me: Because you can't walk around Whole Foods in Spiderman underwear
Blaine: WHY?
Me: Because Mommy will get in trouble
Blaine: WHY?
Me: Because that's the rules
Blaine: WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY?

I max out at about 5 whys. I've definitely been guilty of a few typical mother responses.  I've been guilty of the "because I said so!" on several occasions and the southern mom in me has yelled "no talking back!" too. I know sometimes the kids really are inquisitive, but sometimes I think they know they are driving me crazy and think that is hysterical. I don't blame them. I know I annoy them sometimes just to get a good laugh. But, sometimes in my head its like they're the seagulls from Finding Nemo saying "Mine! Mine! Mine!" all. day. long.

I'm trying to change my ways and have started answering the dreaded question with a question.... "Why do you think?"  So far, it is a fun experience and has lightened the mood of daily activities.  Sometimes when I ask, Blaine answers, "Because you said so?" and we both get a good laugh.

How many why's and follow-up why's do you willingly answer before screaming "BECAUSE I SAID SO" and envision beating your own head against a wall? (Other moms do that, right?) Do you have any tips for severe cases of the "WHYs"?

The Decision to Homeschool

After a lot of thinking, talking, reading, researching, and praying... We have decided to homeschool. We are drawn to it for so many reasons, but one huge reason is that it allows us to maintain a family life.  Enrolling our kids in school would mean Jason would only see the kids one day a week. Running a tattoo shop requires crazy hours, flexibility, and teamwork when balancing a business, home, and two kids. We have learned to make the most with what we have.  Some of our most fun family moments are when Jason has a sudden cancellation and we make a quick trip to the playground, to get ice cream, or just hang out at home together. So in an effort to keep our family unit strong, we decided to make the leap.

I am so excited that the world will be our classroom.  I'm looking forward to taking the kids to experience what we are learning. I feel so blessed that I will get to see them first hand as they grow and learn.

This decision was definitely made easier having friends from my MOPS group who homeschool. They seem to enjoy it so much and are always doing fun and creative things with their kids. I saw them participating in so many group activities and communities. Like most of them, we are joining a group called CHEF (Christian Home Educators Fellowship) that has organized activities like P.E., field trips, camping trips, and more. Blaine is enrolled in Classical Conversations (CC) for this year, which will be the largest part of our curriculum. Quite a few people have been asking me what is involved with CC, so here's an outside blog post I came across a while back briefly explaining it. In addition to CC, we will be doing additional handwriting, phonics, and math.

Also, Vivienne will be sitting in with what Blaine is working on at home.  And Blaine will be sitting in on some of Vivienne's work (mostly Bible study) from Hands On Homeschool, a 2 year old program, which he has already done.

At home:
A while back, I turned our short hallway into a mini school area for Hands On Homeschooling for Blaine. As a confined space, I find it an easy place to hold the attention of our two wild toddlers. And I literally mean a confined space... I lock the doors and block them from escaping by sitting on the edge of our learning space or sometimes putting a gate up. There's no temptations of TV, snacks on the counter, or the dog as a distraction. We do our writing activities at the table, but anything that just requires some conversation, visual aids, iPad, or reading a book is usually handled here on pillow piles and a bean bag chair. I have framed posters of the alphabet, numbers, colors, shapes, separate frames with all of our immediate family members, and a cork board for me to stay organized. This also give us a place to display everything the kids create without disrupting the rest of our home. I've recently cleared off a lot of their artwork from all over the doors and walls. Although, I'm sure it will soon be covered again.  I don't think this little hallway will always be able to hold everything we are working on or always be necessary, but up until now, it has been perfect for what we are doing. We will figure this out more when CC begins NEXT WEEK!

The posters are large and really nothing fancy. Shapes and colors one is 20x30. Alphabet and numbers one is 16x12. Here are the images if you are interested in printing something similar. You don't have to print that big, just shrink to fit 8.5x11.

We are looking forward to this exciting  journey and I hope to update often on what Blaine and Vivienne are learning!

Have you ever thought about homeschooling? If you do homeschool, what do you love most about it? And is there a space in your house that you designate for lessons?

A Very Merry Unbirthday!

I. Love. Birthdays! I have decided we will start celebrating half birthdays in the Becker household! I know this will be a new fun tradition our family will look forward to. Since this is a new thing, we are starting with 2.5 year old Vivienne (Becker bomb #2).

We started our day with a healthy breakfast of..... half donuts! Is there a better way other than with a breakfast full of sugar when you have a 2.5 and (almost) 4 year old?! I think not.

We continued the half bday celebration with lunch of half grilled cheese and half a banana! And a silly face!

Vivienne received an Amazon.com gift card for her birthday and it has just been sitting on my desk ever since. So that made me think... to go along with cake, any gift cards the kids get will be spent on their half birthdays.  They get SO MANY toys for their birthdays, this should help spread them out and give the kids something new that they are into later in the year. I guess normally it would include walking around the toy store, but since it was an Amazon card, I placed an order for FIVE My Little Pony figures (her current fav).

Our kids are 18 months apart - Blaine's birthday is in August and Vivienne's birthday is in February. Blaine's half birthday is in February and Vivienne's is in August. That means (at least) twice a year, we get to eat cake TWICE in one month!

We had a half pink vanilla half bday cake with vanilla frosting. YUM!  I made a cute cake topper to go on the cake and Vivi blew out half a candle.

If this post has inspired you to start having a few extra celebrations in your household, my professional opinion is you start with.... cake! You can purchase and download the printable here for the pink chevron topper. Also available in blue/white chevron and grey/white chevron.  Just cut out, string up, attach with tape or hot glue to some paper straws or bamboo skewers!

Do you celebrate half birthdays? What traditions do you include?
